Birding

The conservancy in Southbroom has an immense variety of birdlife but here are some that particularly stand out:

Barn Swallows

An enormous flock of Barn Swallows have chosen to roost in the reed beds of Umkobi Lagoon at Southbroom, on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast, and in the summer months between October and April, visitors to the area can observe millions of swallows retiring for the evening, a short while before sunset. This natural phenomenon provides both regular and non regular bird watchers with a truly spectacular sight.

Harrier Hawk

These magnificent birds of prey are considered to be vulnerable in South Africa, and are currently breeding in the marshy areas of Southbroom. They are monogamous birds that feed mostly on rodents, small birds and frogs. They are grey in colour.

Trumpeter Hornbill

This hornbill is characterized by a large grey casque on the bill, smaller in females. The eyes are brown or red, with pink surrounding skin.

The Trumpeter Hornbill is a gregarious bird, usually living in groups of 2 to 5 individuals, although sometimes as many as 50. They can be seen and heard all over the Southbroom area, with a distinct “crying baby” call.

Crowned Eagle

A large, boldly-marked, crested eagle with a long tail and broad wings, resembling a massive goshawk. The under parts of the adult are blotched and barred black-and-white; there is also a variable rufous wash across the breast. The pale immature has creamy-tan underwings. These spectacular large birds are breeding successfully along the South coast and often photographed flying low over the beachfronts. They are also considered endangered and are a protected species.

Knysna Loerie

This is a large green bird with a short hooked bill and brilliant red wings. The Knysna Loerie is found only in the coastal forests of South Africa and its prime source of sustenance is fruit, insects and earthworms.

Purple Crested Loerie

This bird has a purple coloured crest above a green head, a red ring around their eyes, and a black bill. The neck and chest are green and brown. The rest of the body is purple, with red flight feathers.  It is the National Bird of the Kingdom of Eswatini, and the crimson flight feathers of this and related turaco species are important in the ceremonial regalia of the Swazi royal family. These birds mainly eat fruit and are a beautiful addition along the Southbroom coastline.

Walking and Hiking

Frederika Preserve

The Frederika Nature Preserve came into being in 1977 when 30 beachfront residential sites where placed on the market. Leo Driessen, a concerned environmentalist, realised the value of the biodiversity of the area and the negative impact that development of the primary dune would have on Southbroom. He chose to purchase all of the properties on offer and donated them into the custody of SA Nature Conservation Centre (now Delta Environmental Centre).

He named the preserve for his wife, Frederika, who later increased its size by the donation of certain adjoining sites on the highest part of the dune.

In 1990, Delta’s then Chairman, and friend of Leo Driessen, Mr NC Bloom,  registered the preserve with the Department of Environment Affairs as a South African Natural Heritage Site of National Importance.

Bushbuck Trails and Imbezane River Reserve

Magnificent indigenous flora exists in the area and the abundant bird life is sure to reward those who undertake the walk. The resident Crowned Eagle and large flock of Crowned Hornbill are particularly special to see and the views of the lagoon and coastline are incredible.
